IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION (for all courses)

SOME OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS NEW FOR WINTER 2010

Once you're in the classroom, please read the syllabus & documents in the top folder under ‘Weekly Assignments’ for detailed information & course requirements.

  • Our weeks begin on Monday each week & end on Saturday. Sunday is the day to look over the assignments for the upcoming week.
  • You must respond to BOTH TOPICS by Thursday each week or you will lose 20 points for the week. This gives everyone a chance to read all posts & have options of which posts to respond to. ALL work, including the required responses to two other posts must be completed no later than Saturday night.
  • NO attachments for responses to the topics or to other posts. It is a good idea to complete your assignments as word documents, save a copy for your records & paste them onto the Discussion Board.
  • I do NOT read anything posted in a folder once the week has ended, so if you have late work we've agreed may be submitted it must be emailed it to me. I do not accept attachments.
  • Responses to the topics must be posted in essay form & be a minimum of 3 paragraphs long. The purpose is NOT to report facts, but to provide analytical evaluation & interpretation of the facts you come across as well as personal insight.

This means:

1.    Researching the topics

2.    gathering information & putting it all together IN YOUR OWN WORDS

3.    including your personal insight & interpretation

4.       documenting your resources

  • NO WIKIPEDIA as a listed resource! If you do use Wikipedia, check other sites to verify the information & list those as your resources. University & museum websites are great places to check out. Please, use your OWN words in your responses to the topics. Also, the textbook is simply our main resource & we all have it, so use it as a place to begin & do more research to share with us.
  • The `P` word...plagiarism You must cite ALL resources. Plagiarism is an increasing problem & I think partially this is because people don't always realize what defines plagiarism. If you use information from a website or book, credit your source. It is NOT sufficient to change a few words & claim something as your own work. Take notes from several resources, add your own interpretation of the information you've gathered, write it out & post it.
  • The required textbook is simply our main resource & we all have it, so use it as a place to begin but it is only a starting point. Please keep citations from the textbook to a minimum.
